The first Ombudsman was Nuala O'Loan, who stood down in 2007. O'Loan was rewarded for her services as Ombudsman by being appointed a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II.[1] She, along with the other recipients of 2008 New Year's Honours, were congratulated by First Minister Ian Paisley.[2]
Former Police Oversight Commissioner, Al Hutchinson, was appointed as her replacement and took up the office on 6 November 2007.[3]
